Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the US must not forget how strong it is in negotiations with Russia, noting that Vladimir Putin has begun to think that he is the one who gets to make decisions.
Source: Zelenskyy in an interview with Reuters, an excerpt from which he posted on social media, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Zelenskyy said he believes the US genuinely wants to end Russia's war.
Quote from Zelenskyy: "I think the US really wants to stop Russia's war. I trust them. Then, I understand it's difficult to stop somebody who's big and doesn't want to stop. That's why you're trying to find some compromises with Russia. But I think we are losing time if we want to play with Russian compromises."
Details: Zelenskyy emphasised that President Donald Trump now wants to achieve some kind of victory before the midterm elections, but, he said, Putin will do all he can to encourage the Iranians and make negotiations impossible.
Quote: "President Trump wants to have some kind of victory before the midterms. But Putin will do everything to push the Iranians and make this whole situation non-negotiable.
The same with Russia's war against Ukraine. If Putin sees that President Trump needs some victory, he will decide what to give and what not to give. And this is the problem – Putin has started to think that it is he who can decide. But America is one hundred times stronger than Russia. Absolutely. They just have to remember that."
Background:
- The New York Times previously reported that the White House is considering signing certain business deals with Russia as a way of demonstrating its good intentions.
- According to the NYT, the US and Russia are also negotiating a multi-billion-dollar deal regarding Lukoil's vast global portfolio of oil fields, refineries and petrol stations. Lukoil is one of Russia's largest energy companies.
- Separately, The Atlantic reported that Trump has agreed to a proposal from his special envoy John Coale to ease sanctions against Russia in exchange for the release of some prisoners held in Russia.
