The Kremlin has welcomed US President Donald Trump's offer to assist Russia following the death of an employee at a plague research laboratory.

Source: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by Russian Interfax and reported by European Pravda

Details: Peskov said that "it is always very good when mutual assistance is offered".

The journalist who asked the question also noted that the US president had described the situation as a major problem for Russia.

"To be honest, I did not hear the president say that he considers this a major problem for Russia. I don't think anything of the sort was said, although I may be mistaken," the Kremlin spokesman replied.

Background:

• Trump has offered Russia assistance in dealing with the incident.
• On 6 October, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Russia should provide more information about the death of the employee at the plague research laboratory.
• The European Commission is also monitoring a possible outbreak of pneumonic plague in Siberia and is ready to coordinate response measures among EU member states if necessary.
