German foreign minister meets Lavrov for first time since 2022

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov have held a meeting in New York.

Details: Wadephul and Lavrov met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's general debate.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed the meeting, saying it had been initiated by the German side.

It was the first meeting between the German and Russian foreign ministers since 2022.

Background:

• On 23 September, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Lavrov in New York.
• Following the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov had complained to Rubio about Ukrainian strikes on Russia.
